          In the circuit court of Cook County, a jury found the defendant, Charles
       McLaurin, guilty of first degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 9--1(a)(1)),
       first degree murder based on the felony-murder doctrine (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38,
       par. 9--1(a)(3)), home invasion (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12--11(a)(2)),
       aggravated arson (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 20--1.1)), residential burglary (Ill.
       Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 19--3(a)), and possession of a stolen motor vehicle (Ill.
       Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 95
