JUSTICE RATHJE delivered the opinion of the court:

Defendant, Julius Kuntu, was charged with 28 counts of first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9-1(a)(2), (a)(3) (West 1998)), 14counts of aggravated arson (720 ILCS 5/20-1.1(a) (West 1998)), and 1 count of arson (720 ILCS 5/20-1 (West 1998)).Subsequently, the State nol-prossed 14 counts of first degree murder, 11 counts of aggravated arson, and the arson count. Ajury convicted defendant of seven counts of first degree murder and one count of aggravated arson. The same jury foundthat there were no mitigating factors sufficient to preclude a sentence of death, and the trial court sentenced defendant todeath. Defendant's execution has been stayed pending direct review by this court. Ill. Const. 1970, art. VI,
