Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Cook County,defendant, Robert Casillas, was convicted of two counts of firstdegree murder. Defendant waived his right to a jury for purposesof sentencing, and the trial court found him eligible for the deathpenalty on the basis of having committed two or more murders.After hearing evidence in aggravation and mitigation, the trialcourt sentenced defendant to death. Defendant's sentence has beenstayed pending direct review by this court. Ill. Const. 1970, art. VI,
