§ 46.2-1993.47. Use of motorcycle dealer's license plates on newly purchasedmotorcycles.

Notwithstanding the provisions of § 46.2-1993.44, any dealer who sells anddelivers to a purchaser a motorcycle at a time when the main offices of theDepartment, its branch offices, or offices of its local agents, are not openfor business and the purchaser is therefore unable to register themotorcycle, may permit the purchaser to use, for a period not exceeding fivedays, on the newly purchased motorcycle, license plates which have beenissued to the dealer, provided that, at the time of the purchase, the dealerexecutes in duplicate, on forms provided by the Commissioner, a certificatebearing the date of issuance, the name and address of the purchaser, theidentification number of the motorcycle, the registration number to be usedtemporarily on the motorcycle, the name of the state in which the motorcycleis to be registered, and whatever other information may be required by theCommissioner. The original of the certificate and a bona fide bill of saleshall be delivered to the purchaser and shall be in the possession of thepurchaser at all times when operating the motorcycle under dealer plates. Onecopy of the certificate shall be retained by the dealer, filed by him, andshall be subject to inspection at any time by the Department's agents. If themotorcycle is to be titled and registered in the Commonwealth, applicationfor title and registration shall be made by the purchaser on the firstbusiness day following issuance of the certificate and a copy of thecertificate shall accompany the applications.

License plates temporarily used by the purchaser shall be returned to thedealer by the purchaser not later than five days after the issuance of thecertificate.
