§ 46.2-1992.36. Use of old license plates and registration number on atrailer.

An owner who sells or transfers a registered trailer may have the licenseplates and the registration number transferred to a trailer titled in theowner's name according to the provisions of Chapter 6 (§ 46.2-600 et seq.),which is in a like trailer category as specified in § 46.2-694 and whichrequires an identical registration fee, on application to the Departmentaccompanied by a fee of two dollars or, if the trailer requires a greaterregistration fee than that for which the license plates were assigned, on thepayment of a fee of two dollars and the amount of the difference inregistration fees between the two trailers, all such transfers shall be inaccordance with the regulations of the Department. All fees collected underthis section shall be paid by the Commissioner into the state treasury andshall be set aside as a special fund to be used to meet the expenses of theDepartment. For purposes of this section, a trailer dealer licensed by theDepartment may be authorized to act as an agent of the Department for thepurpose of receiving, processing, and approving applications from itscustomers for assignment of license plates and registration numbers pursuantto this section, using the forms and following the procedures prescribed bythe Department. The Commissioner, on determining that the provisions of thissection or the directions of the Department are not being complied with by adealer, may suspend, after a hearing, the authority of the dealer to receive,process, and approve the assignment of license plates and registrationnumbers pursuant to this section.

The provisions of this section shall also apply to watercraft trailers andwatercraft trailer dealers.
