§ 2.2-119. Governor to administer highway safety program and secure benefitsto Commonwealth under federal Highway Safety Act of 1966.
It shall be the responsibility of the Governor to administer the highwaysafety program within the Commonwealth and to authorize, direct andcoordinate existing and future activities of agencies of the Commonwealth andits political subdivisions in such program. The Governor, in addition to allother duties and responsibilities conferred on him by the Constitution andlaws of the Commonwealth, may contract and do all other things necessary onbehalf of the Commonwealth to secure the full benefits available to theCommonwealth under the federal Highway Safety Act of 1966, and any amendmentsthereto, and in so doing, cooperate with federal and state agencies, privateand public agencies, interested organizations, and individuals, to effectuatethe purposes of that act and any amendments thereto, and the highway safetyprogram within the Commonwealth.
The Governor shall be the official having the ultimate responsibility fordealing with the United States government with respect to programs andactivities pursuant to the federal Highway Safety Act of 1966 and anyamendments thereto. To that end he shall be responsible for relatedactivities of any and all departments and agencies of the Commonwealth andits political subdivisions. He may designate such persons, agencies andcommissions to assist him in coordinating the activities contemplated underthe federal act, this section, and the state's highway safety program.
