§ 28-5-7.1 Exemption of firefighter andlaw enforcement officer. – It shall not be unlawful for an employer as defined in § 28-5-6(7)(i) orany agency or instrumentality of the state or a political subdivision of thestate to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any person because of theperson's age if the action is taken with respect to the employment of a personas a firefighter or as a law enforcement officer and the person has attainedthe age of hiring or retirement in effect under any state statute, city or townordinance, any collective bargaining agreement, or pension plan in effect onMarch 3, 1983. An employee whose retirement goes into effect shall be allowedto continue his or her employment until the end of the calendar year.
