§ 28-3-2 Production of certificate of ageon demand by compliance inspector. Whenever any truant officer or compliance inspector has reason to doubt thatany child employed in any factory, mechanical, manufacturing, or businessestablishment has reached the age of sixteen (16) years, the complianceinspector shall demand of the child's employer that the employer shall furnishhim or her within ten (10) days a certificate of age issued by the departmentof elementary and secondary education. If the employer refuses or fails toproduce the certificate within ten (10) days, or in case the certificate doesnot show that the child has completed sixteen (16) years of life, the employershall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction shall be subject toa fine of twenty dollars ($20.00). For the purpose of this chapter, thedepartment of elementary and secondary education shall determine the age of thechild on the presentation of a birth certificate, baptismal certificate,passport, or other evidence satisfactory to it.
