§ 1223. Lights  on  vehicles  used  for  transportation of passengers.  Unless otherwise governed by  the  provisions  of  this  chapter,  every  vehicle  used  for the transportation of ten or more passengers upon the  public highways, such as for picnics, hayrides and sleigh rides,  shall,  during  the  period  from  one-half  hour  after sunset to one-half hour  before sunrise, display at least two lighted lamps on the front, one  on  each  side,  having light sources of equal power, which shall be visible  for a distance of at least five hundred feet ahead of  the  vehicle  and  which  shall  project  either  white  or  yellow light, and at least two  lighted lamps on the rear, one on each side,  having  light  sources  of  equal  power,  which  shall  be  visible for a distance of at least five  hundred feet behind the vehicle and which shall project red light.
