46:20-1. General index books; contents
The county recording officer of each county shall provide, at the expense of their respective counties, a book or books, and shall, in case it is not already done, make and therein enter indexes, in alphabetical order, to all the various books of record, called and backed "deeds" and called and backed "mortgages" , heretofore or hereafter recorded in their respective offices, distinguishing the book in which each deed or mortgage is recorded.
The indexes herein required to be kept shall contain the names of the several grantors and grantees of deeds, and the names of the several mortgagors of mortgages.
If a deed is made by a sheriff, the index shall contain the name of the sheriff and the names of the defendants mentioned in the execution by virtue of which the sale was made.
If a deed is made by executors or administrators, the index shall contain the name of each executor or administrator and the testator or intestate.
If a deed is made by an attorney, the index shall contain the name of the attorney and his constituents.
If a deed is made by a commissioner under the laws of this state, or by any officer or person appointed or directed to sell and convey by any court of this state, the index shall contain the name of such commissioner, officer or person and the name of the person whose estate has been conveyed.
