Alteration.
400.3-407. (a) "Alteration" means (i) an unauthorizedchange in an instrument that purports to modify in any respectthe obligation of a party, or (ii) an unauthorized addition ofwords or numbers or other change to an incomplete instrumentrelating to the obligation of a party.
(b) Except as provided in subsection (c), an alterationfraudulently made discharges a party whose obligation is affectedby the alteration unless that party assents or is precluded fromasserting the alteration. No other alteration discharges aparty, and the instrument may be enforced according to itsoriginal terms.
(c) A payor bank or drawee paying a fraudulently alteredinstrument or a person taking it for value, in good faith andwithout notice of the alteration, may enforce rights with respectto the instrument (i) according to its original terms, or (ii) inthe case of an incomplete instrument altered by unauthorizedcompletion, according to its terms as completed.
