        261.81A  IOWA HERITAGE CORPS.
         An Iowa heritage corps is created.  The objectives of the corps
      are to promote public appreciation of Iowa's natural and cultural
      heritage, promote the economic development of Iowa tourism, and
      provide meaningful and productive service and research opportunities
      for students enrolled in public and private colleges and universities
      in the state.  The corps shall provide opportunities in the areas of
      historical and cultural preservation and education, community
      improvement, public policy research, and tourism.  The corps shall
      provide participants with an opportunity to explore careers, gain
      work experience and college credit, and to contribute to the general
      welfare of their communities and state.
         The commission shall solicit participation in the Iowa heritage
      corps and cooperate with museums, historical organizations, public
      and nonprofit agencies, and community development organizations in
      the development of pilot projects for internship positions to be
      included in the work-study program under section 261.81 and shall
      allocate moneys to participating museums, organizations, and agencies
      for the employment of the students under a pilot project.  The
      internships shall include programs which increase public awareness
      of, and appreciation for, Iowa's natural and cultural heritage.  A
      public or private person using interns under the corps for a pilot
      project shall contribute to the eligible postsecondary institution in
      which the intern is enrolled the cost of tuition for credits earned
      by the intern and all costs for materials, supplies, travel, and
      other work- related expenses of the project.
