        8A.377  CAPITOL -- PRESERVATION OF ARCHITECTURAL AND
      HISTORIC INTEGRITY.
         1.  A state agency, branch of government, or any other entity
      responsible for a construction, remodeling, restoration, maintenance,
      or other project in, on, or on the grounds surrounding the capitol
      shall ensure that the project preserves and enhances the dignity,
      beauty, and architectural and historic integrity of the capitol.
         2.  A project described in subsection 1 may vary from the
      architectural or historic integrity of the capitol if such variance
      is necessary to comply with state or federal laws relating to
      building accessibility or occupational safety or health, to address
      life safety issues, or for other compelling reasons.  However, the
      state agency, branch of government, or other entity responsible for a
      project involving a variance from the architectural or historic
      integrity shall submit the plans for such project to the capitol
      planning commission and the capital projects committee of the
      legislative council for review.
