Sec. 53-181. Soliciting rides in motor vehicles. Any person who, while on or
within the limits of the traveled portion of any public highway, solicits a ride in a motor
vehicle, other than a public service motor bus or taxicab, except in case of accident or
emergency, shall be deemed to have committed an infraction and be fined thirty-five
dollars, except that any person may, while on or within the shoulder portion of any
public highway, except a limited access highway, solicit such a ride.

History: P.A. 75-220 added exception allowing hitchhiking on shoulders of public highways other than limited access
highways; P.A. 82-223 specified that violation of the section constituted an infraction and changed the fine from not more
than $10 to $25; P.A. 83-577 increased the fine from $25 to $35.
